Wool, felt and steel: sculpture that is soft to look at and heavy to stand next to.
An exhibition about weight, and how artists make heavy things look light and soft things feel monumental. The works in it are made of wool, felt, steel and stone, and none of them are what they seem from across the room.
Lucía Ferrer’s Second Skin is felted from the wool of a single flock and stands taller than a person, soft enough to want to touch. Mikkel Dahl’s Heavy Light is two tonnes of granite resting on a steel point no wider than a coin, and looks as if a breath could tip it.
The show was hung so that the softest works sit next to the heaviest, and the light changes through the day to make each one look a little different. Visitors are welcome to sit on the floor.
Soft Monuments closed in August 2026. Some of its works stay in the collection, and The Long Thread is on view again now in Loud Colour.
