Pablo Arrieta paints very large canvases in loud colour, usually of one ordinary hour of the day, painted again and again. He was born in Bilbao, studied in Madrid and has lived in Copenhagen on and off since 2018.

He picks a place and a time and goes back every day until he stops seeing it. Afternoon, Repeated is his kitchen at four o’clock, painted every day for a year. Blue Hour, Copenhagen is the street outside the museum at the moment the light goes blue, painted from its office window.

He paints fast, with wide brushes and thick paint, and leaves the marks alone. From across a room his paintings settle into a single moment; up close they are all speed and colour.

He was the museum’s first artist in residence, in the winter of 2025. His easel is still in the office.
