Works with steel, stone and aluminium, folding and balancing heavy materials until they look light.

Mikkel Dahl works with steel, stone and aluminium, folding and balancing heavy materials until they look light. He grew up by the harbour in Aarhus and still works there, in a boat shed he rents by the year.

He makes everything at full size, with no models and no drawings. The aluminium works start as flat sheets that he folds on a press he built himself; the stone works start as blocks he finds in quarries in Norway and turns, a few millimetres at a time, until they balance.

Colour comes from the harbour. Fold Line is painted the yellow of the cranes he watched as a child, matched to the real thing on a winter morning.

His works travel to Copenhagen by boat. Heavy Light needed a crane, two days and very good weather to get into the building.
