Two visitors look at a very wide painting of a yellow sun behind a pink cloud on orange and blue and green rain on pink, in a white skylit hall

Astrid Nyland

2024, Acrylic on canvas

A yellow sun, a pink cloud and blue and green rain, painted flat and four metres wide, all on the same afternoon.

Everything Is Weather puts every kind of day on one canvas: the sun, the cloud in front of it and the rain that follows. Astrid Nyland painted it in flat, bright shapes so it reads from the far end of the main hall.

The canvas is four metres wide and was painted on the floor of her studio in Oslo, which she had to empty to fit it. She worked on it every day for eight months, in the order the weather comes: sun first, cloud second, rain last.

Up close, every edge is cut by hand with a brush, and you can see where she changed her mind. The cloud was once a little lower. The sun was once orange.

It hangs under the skylight in the main hall, so the colours change with the weather outside. On a grey day the orange goes almost brown, and on a bright one the blue looks wet.
