A visitor in a camel coat looks at a dark granite block balanced on a polished steel cone in a white gallery

Mikkel Dahl

2019, Polished steel and granite

A block of granite balanced on a mirror polished steel point, heavier than it looks and lighter than it feels.

The granite weighs just over two tonnes. It rests on a steel point no wider than a coin, polished until it reflects the room, so the stone seems to float above its own reflection.

Mikkel Dahl spent two years finding the balance. The block was cut in Norway, shaped in his boat shed and turned a few millimetres at a time until it would stand still.

It has never moved. Engineers check it every month, and the floor beneath it was rebuilt before it arrived.

Visitors are asked not to touch it. Most of them stand a little further back than they need to.
