2014, Felted wool over a steel frame

A standing form felted from the wool of a single flock of sheep, soft to look at and taller than a person.

Lucía Ferrer felted the work over three months from the wool of one flock of sheep in Andalucía. She knew every sheep by name and kept the wool from each one separate, so the colour changes very slightly as you walk around it.

The form stands over two metres tall on a steel frame you never see. It is soft to look at and heavy to stand next to, and it is the work visitors most want to touch.

Ferrer made it after a winter of looking at old coats and blankets in museum stores, thinking about how wool keeps the shape of the body that wore it.

It is the oldest work in the collection. It turns 25 in 2039, and then it moves on to another museum.
