Mikkel Dahl

2025, Folded and painted aluminium

A single sheet of aluminium folded eleven times and painted the yellow of a harbour crane.

Mikkel Dahl folded the sheet by hand in his boat shed in Aarhus, using a press he built for the work. Eleven folds, each one planned for a week and done in an afternoon.

The sheet started flat, two and a half metres long. Every fold made it shorter and stronger, until it could stand on its own without a base or a bolt.

The yellow is matched to the cranes on the harbour in Aarhus, where Dahl grew up. He mixed the paint himself and tested it against the real cranes on a winter morning.

It arrived in Copenhagen by boat, in one piece, and was carried into the gallery by eight people.
