A visitor in a camel coat stands beside a tall pink painting of a blue cloud and orange and yellow rain in a white, skylit gallery with a bench

Astrid Nyland

2016, Acrylic on canvas

A blue cloud, a hiding red sun and orange and yellow rain on hot pink, painted flat at the height of a door.

The first work by Astrid Nyland to enter the collection, and the one that led to Everything Is Weather. It was bought in 2016, the year it was made, when she was still painting in a garage.

She painted it in a single wet week in Bergen, one drop a day at first, then all of them at once. The cloud is cobalt blue, the rain is orange and yellow, and a small red sun peeks out from behind the cloud, as if it is waiting its turn.

The hot pink ground was a mistake, she says: it was meant to be an undercoat. She liked it too much to paint over it.

It is the brightest work in the collection, and the one children most often stop in front of.
