Elliot Marsh

2020, Brass, steel and electric motors

A brass clock with two hands, each running at a different speed, neither of them telling the time.

Elliot Marsh built the clock from parts of an old station clock and a bicycle. It has two hands, each running at a different speed. One takes a second to go round. The other takes sixty years, and will finish its first turn in 2080.

Neither of them tells the time. Marsh calls it a clock for nobody because there is no one it is useful to, and that is the point: it shows time passing without counting it.

It ticks loudly, and the sound carries through the gallery. Visitors often stop to check their own watches, as if the clock might know something they do not.

A technician winds it every Monday morning before the museum opens. It has never stopped.
